Care for the elderly

As a physician with a keen interest in geriatric care, geriatrics or geriatric care is a branch of medicine that focuses on improving elderly health care. Geriatric care helps support the elderly with healthy improvement by preventing and treating diseases and disabilities that normally affect the elderly. Dr Dreyer is passionate about preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases that affect the elderly, including:

  • Fall prevention
Fall prevention is essential to consider as we grow older because physical changes and health conditions may make falls more likely to occur as we age. Dr Dreyer may recommend physical activity, wearing sensible shoes, removing home hazards, lighting up your living space and using assistive devices such as a cane or walker.

  • Osteoporosis diagnosis and management
This is a medical condition that causes your bones to become weak and brittle. When your bones are weak and brittle, it may lead to you falling or even having mild stresses such as bending over or coughing may cause a fracture. Osteoporosis fractures may commonly occur in the wrist, spine or hip. Signs and symptoms of osteoporosis may cause back pain, loss of height over time, a stooped posture, and bone that breaks much more easily than expected.
To diagnose osteoporosis, Dr Dreyer may measure the density of your bone using a machine that uses low levels of x-rays. This helps the doctor determine the proportion of minerals in your bones. After diagnosing you, Dr Dreyer may recommend osteoporosis medication such as bisphosphonates, denosumab and bone-building medication. Hormone therapy may also be recommended to help maintain bone density.

  • Polypharmacy
This is a medical system where older patients who have several chronic diseases are able to take several different types of medications with different dosages as prescribed by different physicians or filled at more than one pharmacy.
  • Multimorbidity
This refers to the presence of more than one disease or condition. Dr Dreyer helps diagnose and manage patients with multimorbidity in order to improve their health outcomes.
